China's first production line making biscuits for giant panda, a rare species on the verge of extinction, has begun operations at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center in the country's southwestern Sichuan province.

It makes biscuits in eight shapes including a 15-centimeter variety similar to the shape of bamboo, the giant panda's favorite staple food.

Compared with real bamboo, the biscuits contained lots of microelements, vitamins and other component ingredients the pandas needed, said Yu Jianqiu, a research fellow and deputy director of the center. The fiber content of the biscuit reached up to 30 percent.

The special biscuits are designed for the giant panda in captivity as many of them suffer from malnutrition and an imbalanced diet. Thirty-odd giant pandas at the base are being fed with the biscuits and find them delicious and very tasty.

Approximate 1,000 giant pandas currently live at in the wild worldwide, with most of them inhabiting deep in the outlying, high mountains in southwest China's Sichuan province. The giant pandas in captivity numbers only about 110 all over the world.
