Russia on Thursday expressed deep concerns over the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) that it would immediately reactivate its nuclear programs in response to the US suspension of heavy oil supplies to the country.
Russia stands for the strict observance of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons and calls for the nuclear-freestatus of the Korean peninsula, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said in a Thursday statement.
Russia urges the United States and the DPRK to resolve their disputes through dialogues and on the basis of previous agreements, said the spokesman.
Under a 1994 Framework Pact, Pyongyang promised to stop its nuclear program in return for two light water reactors and 500,000tons of heavy oil provided by the United States. Washington made adecision on Nov. 14 to suspend supplies of heavy oil to the DPRK, claiming that the DPRK had been developing a secret nuclear program in violation of the 1994 pact.
