Beijing to Build TV Center Towering Over CBD

Beijing TV Center, breaking the ground December 12, is a large mass media structure projected to mount the skyline of Beijing in CBD.

Sighted on east Chang'an Boulevard and southeast to Guomao Bridge, Beijing TV Center is one of the 60 key projects to be built in Beijing. Not only will its construction help boost the TV industry but also contribute to the hosting of Olympics Games 2008 in Beijing.

Beijing TV Center had last Monday decided on its first-phase underground project by the contracting part starting the preparatory work for construction. As planned, the first-phase project will cover an area of 36,100sqm, with a floor space of 183,000sqm, formed of a comprehensive business building, a multi-functional telecasting center, a life service center and other structures.

In a breakdown, the comprehensive business building with an area of 75,000sqm will be built 44 storied, 41 above ground, 3 underground. The exterior will be designed into a dragon spiraling up the main building 200 meters high, indicating "Rising Prosperity". And the interior will adopt an open layout on a large scale, composed of a telecasting center, information rooms, programs directing centers, editing offices etc. The multi-functional telecasting center, covering an area of over 40,000sqm, will be qualified for telecasting, recording and live transmission. The spacious square, surrounded by the above-said buildings as well as the life service center, will be used for performances.

Upon its completion within four years, the 236-meter-high Beijing TV Center will become a focus for re-development. It is predicted to finish the main part of the building complex by 2005, install telecasting equipment in 2006 and begin trial operation in 2007.
