China on Wednesday extended its gratitude to all governments, organizations and individuals who have sent congratulatory messages for Shanghai's successful bid to host the 2010 World Expo and pledged to make the event a great success.

"We hereby extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have called or written to the Chinese government, the municipal government of Shanghai and our commission to convey warm congratulations and best wishes," says the China National Commission on Shanghai's 2010 World Expo Bid in an open letter released here Wednesday.

Shanghai, China's largest city and economic center, won its bid on December 3 at the 132nd General Assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Since then, congratulatory messages have poured in from government departments, non-governmental organizations, multinational companies and friends in many countries as well as their embassies and consulates in China, says the letter.

Many overseas Chinese and compatriots in the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao and in Taiwan also congratulated Shanghai on its success, the letter adds.

"We also want to pay our highest homage to the Bureau of International Expositions and to all countries, organizations and friendly personages who have shown their understanding of and in various ways supported or assisted China's bid for the World Expo," it says.

"The World Expo plays an irreplaceable role in promoting the world's social, economic and scientific development. China will keep to its commitments and, with the support of all Chinese people as well as the backing and participation of other countriesin the world, make the 2010 Shanghai World Expo a successful, splendid and unforgettable international gala," it concludes.
