Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday urged Israel to end its violence against the Palestinians.
Mubarak made the remark during a meeting with US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer, who is here on a private visit, an Egyptian presidential source said.
During the meeting, Mubarak also appealed to the United States to shoulder its responsibilities to help end the cycle of violence and restart peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel, the source added.
On Monday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher also met with Kurtzer, who said after the meeting that he did not take with him any message from the Israeli government.
"The meeting focused on the situation in Israel before elections scheduled for Jan. 28," Maher told reporters after the meeting.
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been mounting over the past two weeks, with death tolls on both sides rising.
More than 2,700 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed since the outbreak of violence in late September 2000.
Egypt, the first Arab country to have signed peace treaty with Israel in 1979, has been a key mediator in solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
