An American producer donated the copyright of the Chinese edition of a documentary on the Nanjing Massacre during World War II to China on Tuesday, followed by the film's debut screening in Beijing.

Sherwin Liou, one of the initiators of the documentary and president of the St.Louis Alliance for Preserving the Truth About the Sino-Japanee War, presented the videotape of the film and copyright certification to the Beijing-based Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japan on behalf of the producer, Lou Reda, at a ceremony at the museum.

The 45-minute film consists of secret pictures taken by American priest John Magee and movie fragments shot by a Japanese journalist attached to the army during the massacre by Japanese invaders in 1937. Over 300,000 civilians and unarmed soldiers were killed in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu province.

When the History Channel in the United States screened the film three times in two years after it was finished in 1999, it drew an average 20 percent higher audience rating compared with other contemporary documentaries, Liou said. The film won a prize from the channel for its contribution to revealing the truth about an historical event.

Chen Qigang, curator of the museum, said the museum would soon regularly screen the film in its exhibition hall and would issue video compact discs.

"I'd heard of the massacre in my childhood and after growing up,I realized the importance of showing the historical truth to the people around the world and educating our offsprings to prevent such crimes against humanity from happening again," 66-year-old Liou said.
