Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that the Russian-NATO cooperation has entered a "practical stage" while calling for further promoting mutual confidence.
"We have moved from talks to action," Putin said when meeting with NATO Secretary-General George Robertson, adding that Russia and NATO are very close in their assessment of military needs in the new security environment
Putin said Moscow was watching closely to last month's NATO summit in Prague and hopes the recent expansion of the alliance would not "promote tension, but increase confidence."
"You know our position on NATO expansion, but we have taken note of your statement," he said. Putin meanwhile stressed that political dialogue remains the main ways to resolve international conflicts.
Robertson, who arrived in Moscow on Sunday for a Russia-NATO conference on anti-terrorism, also met with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.
