Road Accidents in Malaysia Claim 157 People During Festive Season
Eight people died in road accidents nationwide on Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths to 157 in the past nine days around the Breaking Fast Festival, the Islamic festival marking the end of the Ramadan month of fasting.

A federal traffic police spokesman told reporters here Sunday the eight victims comprised four motorcyclists, a pillion rider, acar driver and a passenger, and a pedestrian. Nineteen deaths werereported nationwide last Friday and 28 last Thursday.
The spokesman said 797 road crashes were reported on Saturday compared with 736 on Friday.
Police also issued 3,580 summonses to motorcyclists on Saturdaycompared with 3,061 summonses on Friday, according to the spokesman.
During the Breaking Fast Festival, which falls on last Friday, most Muslim families in cities were returning to the homes of their parents and loved ones in other states to celebrate this auspicious occasion. The heavy traffic on the road has increased accidents.
Among the major fatal crashes reported Thursday was an accidenton the Klang-Teluk Intan road in central Malaysia resulting in eight family members in a van losing their lives on the spot.
The traffic police have launched "attitude action" on Nov. 29 to reduce road accidents during the festival.
