Geologists have located an area with hundreds of millions of tons of oil and coal reserves around Ningjin county and Nangong city, in southern part of Hebei province, north China.

The Ningjin-Nangong area has a petroleum reserve of approximately one billion tons and a coal reserve of more than 17 billion tons as well as rich exploitable gas resources, according to geologists from the Hebei Provincial Geology and Minerals Prospecting Bureau.

The vast Huabei (North China) Plain is a sedimentary plain, which is anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 meters thick, bearing rich oil, natural gas and coal resources, the geologists noted.

The proven oil reserve in the area boasts 976 million tons and is of high quality. Currently, only three million tons of crude oil are exploited annually.

Moreover, the proven natural gas reserve in the Huabei Plain tops 16 billion cubic meters and the annual gas output in the region is more than 300 million cubic meters, most of which is piped to the national capital of Beijing.

A research report by the Geological Research Institute under the China Petroleum Prospecting Bureau shows that Huabei Plain also has a 3,000-meter-thick source bed rich in oil gas. And experts have so far selected and marked 11 oil gas-bearing belts for future prospecting.

Meanwhile, the region boasts rich coal and coal gas resources. A coal-gas reserve of over 144 billion cubic meters has been found in the strata around 2,000 meters underground in Dacheng county and at least more than 54 billion cubic meters in the strata of less than 1,500 meters subterranean.

Experts predicted that the coal gas reserves in and around the county could be developed for 100 to 200 years with further prospecting at deeper strata.
