Facing a deadline set on midnight Wednesday, the UN Security Council extended the "oil-for-food" program for 180 days and requested a review to the "goods review list" in 30 days.

The 15-member council is believed to vote unanimously for the routine extension following a day-long debate, according to a diplomat close to the council meeting. The consensus was achieved after the United States gave up its request for another technical roll-over.

The council on Nov. 25 voted to approve a nine-day technical roll-over to the humanitarian program. As a temporary measure, theshort extension allows further discussion on the review of the so-called "goods review list."

The United States has expressed concern that some items on the list did not necessarily apply for civilian or humanitarian purposes, and may improve the Iraqi government's ability for chemical warfare.
