Macao started Wednesday issuing new identity cards with exquisite looking and high technology involved, with which local residents would find their daily life much easier.

Those without the identity cards now in use, including childrenat the age of five or above and people who lost their cards, will become the first batch to obtain new cards in the coming two weeks.

The entire card replacement -- for more than 380,000 permanent residents and roughly 40,000 non-permanent residents -- will take four years, the General Secretariat for Administration and Justicesaid.

The so-called "intelligence identity cards" indicates not only personal identity, but can be used in place of driving license, medical card, student card and electronic purse.

As to privacy protection, the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has set up a special committee to supervise data management, assuring local residents that part of data stored by one body in the new cards cannot be retrieved by another.

And one who destroys, usurps or steals other people's cards will be punished with prison terms and fines in accordance with a rule passed by the Legislative Assembly.

The card-change move will cost the SAR government 128 million patacas (16 million US dollars) as part of a wider effort to address the demand in the development of e-government.
