Chinese Senior Legislator Meets Uruguayan President

Uruguayan President Jorge BatlleIbanez held talks Tuesday in Beijing with Tian Jiyun, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), and both expressed the intention to further advance bilateral relations.

Uruguayan President Jorge BatlleIbanez held talks Tuesday in Beijing with Tian Jiyun, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), and both expressed the intention to further advance bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Batlle congratulated China on Shanghai's successful bid to host World Exposition 2010, and hoped the globalevent would lead to further prosperity for Shanghai.

He reiterated Uruguay's support for China's stance on many international and regional issues, in particular the Taiwan issue.

He said his country always backs the One-China policy. He also expressed the belief that the Chinese government, which has maintained stability and prosperity in Hong Kong and Macao after recovering sovereignty over them, could resolve the Taiwan issue as soon as possible. China's peaceful unification would boost its national strength and as a result benefit the peace and development of the world, he added.

The cooperative agreements signed during past high level exchanges by China and Uruguay would promote their smoothly developed economic and trade ties, he said.

Batlle also invited more Chinese companies to invest in his country.

Tian thanked Batlle for Uruguay's support for China's stance onTaiwan and other international and regional issues.

He spoke highly of the remarkable achievements Uruguay had madein its political, economic and social fronts, as well as its contribution to regional integration in Latin America.

The Chinese senior legislator said the visits to Uruguay last year by Chinese President Jiang Zemin and the NPC Standing Committee Chairman Li Peng, and the recent trip to China by Batlle,marked a new stage of long-term stability and mutual benefit in bilateral relations.

Tian and his NPC delegation arrived here on Tuesday following afour-day visit to Chile.
