Friendship is Only Road for China, Russia: Jiang

The consolidation and development of friendship and cooperation is the only possible course for Russia and China, said Chinese President Jiang Zemin Monday during talks with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Jiang said both countries should abide by the principles and spirit of the China-Russia treaty of friendship and cooperation signed last year, and work hard to further consolidate and develop such relations.

He said it is the only choice of the two neighbors and the common aspiration of the two peoples, and is in tune with world peace and development and the common interests of both countries.

"We are ready to join with Russia to boost the bilateral ties,"Jiang said.

"To reach the goal, I suggest we fully tap the enormous potential of the China-Russia treaty of friendship and cooperationin propelling bilateral ties and continue the full implementation of the treaty to ensure our long-standing relations as good neighbors, good partners and good friends," Jiang said.

Jiang also proposed continuing and consolidating the existing high-level exchanges and regular meetings, accelerating the execution of large-scale trade and economic cooperation projects, exploring new possibilities and upgrading the level and scale of trade and economic cooperation, strengthening military technology cooperation and military exchanges, expanding cooperation in cultural fields, learning and benefiting from each other.

Jiang also advocated boosting cooperation between local governments and enhancing unofficial contacts, especially mutual understanding and friendship between the younger generations.
