Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said that China and Russia has a mature and steady relationship during a meeting Monday with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

They had a cordial and friendly conversation.

After giving President Putin a warm welcome, Hu recalled his working visit to Russia in October, 2001, saying that he was delighted to meet President Putin again in Beijing.

Hu gave a high appraisal of the growth of Sino-Russian ties. Since the two countries signed the Sino-Russian treaty of friendship and cooperation, he noted, Sino-Russian relations had taken a big step forward thanks to the direct attention of President Jiang Zemin and President Putin.

The mutual political trust and strategic coordination had reached unprecedented heights.

The development of Sino-Russian friendly, cooperative relations complied with the fundamental interests and common aspirations of the people of the two countries, he said, and would benefit regional and world peace and stability.

China was willing to make concerted efforts with the Russian friends to open a new chapter in bilateral cooperation so as to bring happiness to both countries and their people, Hu said.

Putin fully agreed with Hu, saying that political contacts, economic cooperation and mutual coordination in international affairs were the three pillars of the Russia-China strategic partnership of cooperation.

He said he cherished the progress and the high-level cooperation already achieved.

Russia was ready to promote its friendly and cooperative ties with China in the fundamental interests of the two peoples and for the progress of the democratization of international relations.

Hu briefed Putin on the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

The two leaders also exchanged views on each country's social and economic development, as well as the war against terrorism, international situation and other issues of common concern.

In the talks with Putin Monday morning, President Jiang Zemin said he believed Hu Jintao, his successor as head of the Communist Party of China (CPC), will soon form good working relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He said the 16th National Congress of the CPC last month had elected a new central committee, or the leading body of the CPC, thus realizing the smooth transition of leadership from the old to the new.

He said the closer cooperation between the two leaders would further consolidate and deepen the Sino-Russian strategic partnership of cooperation.

Putin expressed his congratulations on the successful conclusion of the National Congress, saying it was an important event in China's political life as well as in the world political arena.

He said Russia wholeheartedly wished and firmly believed that the lofty goals set in the congress could be realized.

Russia would join with the new Chinese leaders in pushing forward good-neighborly, friendly and cooperative relations, Putin said.
