China is urging state bodies to give priority to domestic companies when they purchase domestic software products and services. The move is aimed at stimulating the domestic software industry.

China's leading newspaper, the People's Daily, reported that China will allocate no less than 500 million US dollars of central government funds to support the growth of the domestic software industry up to 2005.

Domestic software firms will be allowed to open foreign currency accounts in a bid to help boost their exports and will receive support to establish research and sales units overseas.

Software firms will also be encouraged to establish research joint ventures with multinationals.
