Chinese Swimmers Cruise into World Cup Finals

Chinese top swimmers, including world champion Luo Xuejuan and world record holder Qi Hui, booked their places in the finals at the FINA World Cup short course tournament in Shanghai on Sunday.

Chinese top swimmers, including world champion Luo Xuejuan and world record holder Qi Hui, booked their places in the finals at the FINA World Cup short course tournament in Shanghai on Sunday.

Luo, women's 50 meters and 100 meters breaststroke world champion, placed sixth in the 100 meters breaststroke with one minute 10.48 seconds from the morning heats, well behind Mima Jukic from Australia in 1:08.82 and her teammate Qi Hui 1:08.90.

Qi, world record holder in the women's 200m breaststroke, later topped in the women's 200m individual medley in 2:13.56, beating Yana Klochkova, Olympic champion from Ukraine to fifth place.

Klochkova also secured a berth in the 200m backstroke final.

Local favorite Xu Yanwei, who collected five gold medals in the Asian Games, met no strong challenge by entering the women's 50m freestyle final with 25.42 and the 100m butterfly final with 1:00.18.

The 15-year-old Wu Peng, double winner in the men's 400m individual medley and 200m butterfly in the opening leg of the World Cup in Brazil, finished sixth in the 400m freestyle heats.

Veteran Jin Hao and Ouyang Kungpeng, national record holder in 50m and 100m backstroke, came to a one-two finish in the men's 100m medley, ahead of Ukraine's breaststroke specialist Oleg Lisogor.
