China's world record holder Qi Hui broke a new World Cup record in the women's 200 meters individual medley at the FINA World Cup short course swimming tournament at the Jing'an Sports Center in Shanghai on Sunday.

Qi, who swept three gold medals and one silver in the Pusan Asian Games in October, made a powerful surge in the breaststroke event, her favorite stroke, and touched the wall in a time of two minutes and 8.77 seconds.

She beat Ukraine's double Olympic champion Yana Klochkova into third place 2:10.91 and also improved Klochkova's previous meet record of 2:9.10, which was set in Paris, in January, 2002. Another local swimmer Zhang Tianyi took the silver in 2:9.85.

Qi said: "Klochkova is the strongest rival of the event. But I didn't think of that during my competition. I didn't train for this meet and didn't expect a World Cup record. It is my personal-best."

Earlier in the evening, Qi won the 100 meters breaststroke in 1:06.14, defeating the pre-meet favorite Luo Xuejuan, double winner over 50m and 100m in last year's World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Luo finished second in 1:06.81.

"I also improved my career best by 0.4 seconds in the 100m breaststroke," said the 18-year-old.

Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine claimed victory in the men's 100m individual medley in 54.74 and 50m breaststroke in 27.39.
