Half of Russians View China Favourably

Nearly half of Russians have a positive view of China, which they praise for its fast-paced economic development, according to a poll released ahead of a three-day visit by President Vladimir Putin to China.
Some 42 per cent of the poll's respondents - most of them with college education - said that they saw China in a good light, the poll said.
Only 12 per cent of respondents said they had bad feelings about Russia's south-east neighbour, the poll said, adding that a third of those who eyed China with suspicion lived close to the Sino-Russian border in the Pacific far-east.
At least 67 per cent of Russians thought China did a better job than Russia at economic development, the pollers said, adding that a vast majority of those had a positive view of China.
However, 73 per cent of the poll's respondents - mostly young people and/or supporters of President Putin - thought Russia held a greater political influence in the international community.
Mr Putin begins a three-day visit to China tomorrow, becoming the first world leader to visit since the 16th Party Congress of Chinese Communist Party earlier this month.
