A 450-ton hydro turbine wheel set off Friday by ship from Shanghai up the Yangtze River to the dam site at the Three Gorges project in central China's Hubei Province.

The turbine wheel, 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters high, will be part of the No.7 generating unit at the gigantic hydro-power project.

It took 18 months for the Shanghai Hydro-Power Equipment Co., Ltd., a joint-venture between the Shanghai Electrical Corporation and Vioth Siemens Hydro Power Generation from Germany, to produce the hydro turbine wheel.

Its production proves the country's capability of manufacturing super large hydro-power equipment, according to Chinese and foreign specialists.

The Three Gorges hydropower project, which will cost an estimated 203.9 billion yuan (about 24.6 billion US dollars), is to be completed in 2009.
