Sharon Wins Likud Primary Election: Final Result
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon won the Likud party primary election with a 15 percent lead over his rival Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, final results announced on Friday morning showed.

In the race, Sharon won 55.8 percent of the votes, Netanyahu 40.8 percent, and the third candidate Moshe Feiglin 3.4 percent. The voter turnout was 46 percent, indicating that only 140,000 of the total 300,500 Likud members went to vote.
Sharon said after the election that he will lead the Likud partyto win as double parliament seats as it has now. "The Likud will double its strength. If we work together, we will achieve an even better result," Sharon predicted.
Sharon will face the Labor party's newly-elected chairman, Haifamayor Amram Mitzna in the Jan. 28 general elections.
Netanyahu congratulated Sharon on his victory and called on Likud members to unite around their leader to ensure that the party "wins a huge victory in the forthcoming elections."
A recent survey showed that the right-wing and religious bloc ofLikud, Shas, National Union, United Torah Judaism, and National Religious Party will win 64 out of the total 120 parliament seats in the coming general elections, while the left one including the Labor, Meretz and the Arab parties are expected to garner 37 mandates.
