Seven miners were trapped underground when a gas explosion occurred in an unlicensed coal mine in Baishan City, in northeast China's Jilin Province, Tuesday morning.

The coal mine has only one entrance, which is against safety standards and regulations.

By noon Wednesday, the fire continued to burn underground. Though an 18-member rescue team was sent to the site soon after the explosion, the rescuers had difficulty descending to the bottom of the mine.

Sun Changdong, the owner of the mine, is at large.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
