The United States has asked about 50 countries around the world for help in the event of war with Iraq, US Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said on Tuesday.

"Some have said they will help a lot, some have said a little and some have asked that what they are prepared to do be kept confidential," Rumsfeld told reporters at the Foreign Press Center in Washington.

The US defense chief declined to say whether Russia or the Arab countries were among the countries approached. US President George W. Bush lobbied NATO allies at a summit of the transatlantic organization in Prague last week.

The move underlines the Bush administration's determination to make sure the Iraqi regime is aware of "our seriousness of purpose," Rumsfeld noted.

The Bush administration has threatened to take military actions against Iraq if the country fails to comply with UN Security Council's resolutions on Iraq disarmament.
