The resumption of weapons inspections in Iraq is going "so far so good," chief UN inspector Hans Blix said after briefing the UN Security Council on his trip to the country.
Speaking to reporters after the briefing, Blix said the resumption of inspections is going well with more equipment and inspectors arriving in Baghdad, adding he would have some 100 inspectors on the ground by Christmas.
"The talks with the Iraqi government were largely follow-ups onthe discussions in Vienna on practical arrangements," he said.
Blix said that the Iraqis had expressed "some uncertainty" about how it should prepare a declaration of all nuclear, chemicaland biological programs.
"In the discussion with our Iraqi colleagues, there were some talks about the declaration... by Iraq to the Security Council by Dec. 8," he said. "They expressed some concerns about what the council wanted because this is a new formula."
Blix said that he was not authorized to give any interpretationto what the council had demanded, but "clearly, the most importantthing was that whatever there existed by way of weapons programs and proscribed items should be fully declared."
"The work of Dr. Blix and his team in Iraq during the brief visit is so far so good," Council President Wang Yingfan told reporters after the briefing.
"We stress that we need cooperation from the Iraqi authorities for the implementation for the UN resolutions and especially the latest one adopted at the Security Council," he said.
