The port of Zhangzhou in East China's Fujian province has become a testing ground for operating cargo shipping routes to Taiwan. A direct sea link was launched on Saturday between Zhangzhou and Taiwan's Jinmen Island.

The move is being hailed as a significant breakthrough towards achieving economic and trade cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan. The shipping link between the port of Zhangzhou and Jinmen will be used to supply the people of Jinmen with materials to improve their daily lives and help construction projects.

It is hoped the new route will help establish more trade links which Taiwanese business people hope will save both money and time, and boost economic exchanges.
