At least 60 Israeli army tanks, armored vehicles and bulldozers on early Friday stormed the southern Gaza Strip village of Al Garara, east of the town of Khan Younis, a Palestinian public security spokesman said in Gaza Friday.
The spokesman said the Israeli tanks were first stationed at the Kisofim junction, and then moved to the village, with the support of two attack helicopters.
The operation was aimed at reoccupying the village near the center of Khan Younis.
Palestinian security sources said Israeli tanks stationed in the Jewish settlement of Nitzarim, south of Gaza City, fired sevenshells at one of the city's southern neighborhoods. No injuries were reported.
The Israeli army has recently increased military operations into the Gaza Strip. Palestinian security officials believe the military moves are directed against the Palestinian militia that has intensified attacks on the Israeli army and Jewish settlements.
Hours before the Israeli strike on Al Garara, a Palestinian suicide bomber, who was a member of the Islamic Hamas movement, blew himself up on a bus in Jerusalem, killing 11 people and wounding 56 others.
The Israeli Radio reported that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz have both agreed to intensify military operations into the Palestinian-controlled territories.
