Netanyahu Says He Might Not Join Sharon Government After Elections
Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday he will not join a government led by Prime Minster Ariel Sharon after the Jan. 28 elections unless Sharon renounces his statements that a Palestinian state will be formed.
Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday he will not join a government led by Prime Minster Ariel Sharon after the Jan. 28 elections unless Sharon renounces his statements that a Palestinian state will be formed.
In an interview with the Israeli Army Radio, Netanyahu noted that of the three remaining candidates for prime minister, Sharon and newly-elected Labor party Chairman Amram Mitzna support a Palestinian state and he is the only one who does not.
However, Sharon's ally, Communications Minister Reuven Rivlin, responded in a later Army Radio interview that he and the rest of the Likud ministers continue to support Sharon even though they oppose a Palestinian state.
Rivlin said he could not understand why Netanyahu came out with such a threat now, after joining Sharon's government just two weeks ago.
Sharon's views have not changed in the last two weeks and the timing of Netanyahu's statement is very suspicious, Rivlin said.
Sharon and Netanyahu will compete in a Likud leader election next week. Opinion polls show Sharon will defeat his rival and become prime minister once again.
