Chinese Li Grabs Women's 53kg Jerk Gold, Break World Record
Chinese lifter Li Xuejiu broke the women's 53kg jerk world record set minutes ago by Ri Song-hui of DPR Korea, and beat Ri on bodyweight advantage to clinch the jerk title here on Wednesday at the weightlifting worlds.

When Li cleared the weight of 120kg in her second attempt, Ri jerked 122.5kg in her first attempt and subsequently lifted 125.5kg, breaking the world record of 125kg set by Chinese Yang Xia at the Sydney Olympics.

Then Li, 22, decided to try 127.5kg in her third attempt and made it.

Although Ri, 24, and the Busan Asian Games champion of the category, also overcame 127.5kg in her third attempt, Li took the gold medal as she was 0.05kg lighter than Ri.

"Ri's performance had forced me to corner and my coach and I decided to fight to the end and chose the 127.5kg, 7.5kg heavier than my second attempt," Li said.

"The weight is around my maximum strength and I made it," she added.

Li Shunzhu, head coach of the Chinese women's team, said, "the selection of the weight in the last attempt was a subtle thing. Thinking it over, we predicted that Ri would dare not to try 128kg.And things went like that."

"Li Xuejiu, who did not attend the Busan Asiad, performed her best today and she deserved the win," he added.
