Amram Mitzna, the dovish mayor of Haifa, won the Israeli Labor party leadership primary Tuesday and will run against the Likud in the Jan. 28 elections, a television exit poll shows.
The poll, conducted by the Dahaf Institute, headed by Dr. Mina Tsemach, showed Mitzna swept the Labor leadership primary with 57 percent, a full 22 percent ahead of his closest rival and party chairman Binyamin Ben Eliezer, who garnered 35 percent.
The third candidate in the race, Haim Ramon, got only 8 percent.
Mitzna's supporters cautiously welcomed the results. Lawmaker Yossi Katz, Mitzna's campaign chief, said "we have to be careful about making predictions before the votes are counted and the finalresults are in."
Israel's Channel One television said Ben Eliezer's supporters were already conceding defeat.
Mitzna, 57, said Tuesday in Jerusalem "at the end of the day, I will be the new head of the Labor party."
He said he would reverse Sharon's course by withdrawing unilaterally from the Gaza Strip and negotiating with the Palestinians if elected prime minister.
