The 16th World Congress of Accountants, with the theme on "Knowledge-based Economy and the Accountant," opened Tuesday morning at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition center.
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji officiated the opening ceremony attended by over 5,000 people from approximately 100 countries and regions around the world, and delivered a speech. When the premier entered into the great hall, he was welcomed by a standing ovation.
Peter Wong, chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 16th World Congress of Accountants, Alvin Wong, president of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants and Rene Ricol, president of the International Federation of Accountants, made salutatory remarks, while Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government Tung Chee Hwa extended congratulations to the Congress.
Amidst heartfelt applause, Premier Zhu began his speech. He firstly expressed his warmest congratulations and sincere welcome to all the accountants and business representatives from around the world on behalf of the Chinese Government and people.
"It gives a distinct pleasure to see the World Congress of Accountants meet in Hong Kong," the premier said.
Zhu said in the present-day world characterized by surging scientific and technological revolution, the development of the knowledge economy and the promotion of adjustment in the industrial structure, new opportunities and new challenges were brought about to all industries and trades including accounting.
The Chinese government has attached great importance to the development of the accounting profession, and has made unremitting efforts in the building of the accounting system, the making of auditing rules and the training of professionals in this area, he said.
On the just-concluded 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Zhu said the congress mapped out the strategy for an all-around development of China's reform, opening-up and modernization drive.
Turning to the experience of Hong Kong since its return to the motherland in 1997, he said, the five years demonstrated that the "One Country, Two Systems" formula has not only enabled Hong Kong to retain its original systems and characteristics in its continued role as an international trade, financial and shipping center, but also let it acquire stronger support and even broader room for development from the mainland.
He stressed that the Central Government will, as always, give its all-out support to Hong Kong's development and step up the mutually complementary exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland in quest for common development.
The 16th World Congress of Accountants, hosted by the Hong Kong Society of Accountants, is the first time that the congress is held on Chinese soil.
