Premier Zhu Arrives in HK to Attend World Congress of Accountants
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, slated to leave for Hong Kong by special plane this afternoon, will be invited to preside over the opening ceremony of the 16th World Congress of Accountants held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center tomorrow and deliver a speech.
Premier Zhu Attends 16th World Congress of Accountants in HK
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, slated to leave for Hong Kong by special plane this afternoon, will be invited to preside over the opening ceremony of the 16th World Congress of Accountants held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center tomorrow and deliver a speech.
It is the first time that Zhu Rongji has visited Hong Kong in the capacity as Premier of the State Council.
Upon the arrival of the premier, some 140 children waving China's national flags, regional flags of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and flowers were present at the Hong Kong International Airport to greet him and his party. Zhu and his wife Lao An were presented with bouquets of flowers by two children, with a military band striking up a tune of welcome.
Part of Zhu's entourage arrived here aboard the same plane with the premier. They include Jing Shuping, vice chairman of the 9th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce; Dai Xianglong, governor of the People's Bank of China; Liao Hui, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council; Wei Liqun, director of the Research Office of the State Council; Jiao Huancheng, director of the Bureau of Government Offices Administration under the State Council; and Li Wei, director of the Premier's Office of the State Council,
Minister of Finance Xiang Huaicheng and Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council Xu Shaoshi, also Zhu's entourage, had arrived in Hong Kong earlier.
Zhu and his party were greeted at the airport by Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and his wife Betty Tung, the SAR's Administrative Secretary Donald Tsang, Financial Secretary Antony Leung, Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung, President of the Legislative Council Rita Fan, member of the Executive Council Leung Chun-ying, President of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants Alvin Wong.
Tuesday morning he will attend the flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square, and soon afterwards preside over the opening ceremony of World Congress of Accountants 2002, making a speech in the meantime; in the afternoon, he will meet with Tung Chee hwa, senior governmental officials, Chinese-invested institutions and personages in business circles respectively. And lastly, the Premier is slated to leave Hong Kong at noontime Wednesday.
Local media point out the Premier's upcoming tour demonstrates the central government's attention to Hong Kong, supporting and trusting the SAR government and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong".
World Congress of Accountants, known as the accountants Olympic, is held every five years. This year's grand meeting is due to take place in Hong Kong and continue for four days from tomorrow. It is also the first time that the congress is held in the Chinese territory.
Over 5,000 delegates from about 100 countries and regions have confirmed their participation in this year's event.
The World Congress of Accountants provides a unique forum for the international accountancy and business communities to share information and exchange views on the latest issues of the profession.
