Greek Cypriots want clarification of UN Cyprus plan: Clerides
Cyprus' President Glafcos Clerides Sunday said the Greek Cypriot side will ask for clarification on some issues in the plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Cyprus' President Glafcos Clerides Sunday said the Greek Cypriot side will ask for clarification on some issues in the plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Speaking upon his return from Greece, Clerides said he had informed the United Nation that he does not agree with a provision in the plan, which says the leaders of Cyprus' two sides will become co-presidents during the transitional period of three years.
Clerides has just concluded his three day visit to Athens, wherehe and Greek leaders carried out "an in-depth analysis" of the UN plan.
Clerides noted that there is complete accord between the Greek government and the Greek Cypriot side on the plan, stressing that if Turkey cypriots does not have the political will to negotiate, then there will not be common ground for the plan.
On Monday, Clerides will inform the National Council, the top advisory body to the Cypriot president on Cyprus issue, on the results of his Athens tour.
Asked whether he will sign the Annan plan before a referendum, Clerides said he will listen to the views of the National Council.
Cyprus has been divided into the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since Turkish invasion in 1974 in the wake of a short-live coup in Nicosia seeking union with Greece.
Annan last Monday submitted a peace plan for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem and asked both sides to reply in seven days.
The plan provides for the reduction of Greek and Turkish Cypriotcontingents. According to the plan, Turkish troops would be phased out eventually.
Local reports said Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who wasscheduled to return to the island on Saturday from New York, where he underwent an open-heart surgery on Oct. 7, had been readmitted to hospital after his health condition was worsened.
