Seven Iraqi civilians have been killed and four others injured in the latest air raids by US and British warplanes in southern Iraq.

An Iraqi Air Defence Command spokesman said US and British planes bombed civilian and service facilities in the southern province of Najaf.

The spokesman added that Iraq's air defences fired at the planes and forced them back to their bases in Kuwait.

Najaf is within the so-called southern no-fly zone, parallel to another one in northern Iraq.
