Taiwan's Denying Direct Flights Frustrates Links

Taiwan authorities have once again turned a cold shoulder to mainland sincerity over cross-Straits relations, embodied in Jiang Zemin's report to the just-concluded 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

On Tuesday, the island's ruling Democratic Progressive Party rejected a call for direct charter flights across the Taiwan Straits.

The call was from Taiwanese people living on the mainland - most of them businessmen - who will return home for family reunions during the Spring Festival.

Undoubtedly, the Taiwan authorities' rejection has snubbed the flames of hope to end cross-Straits separation.

People expect Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's active response to improve cross-Straits relations. But Chen once again disappointed all Chinese, including Taiwan compatriots.

With the absence of the three direct links between the mainland and Taiwan, charter flights across the Straits would undeniably serve as an appropriate way to effectively shorten the distance between the two sides during peak times.

The decision also bears testimony to the Taiwan authorities' long-held policy of serving their own political purposes, while sacrificing the fundamental interests of the Taiwanese people.

It is well-known that since he took office, Chen has always pursued to split the Taiwan island from the motherland and set various hurdles for cross-Straits direct connections.

To realize de facto independence, Taiwan authorities have carried out a series of measures attempting to sever links between the island and the mainland.

The rapidly increasing economic and personnel exchanges across the Taiwan Straits were therefore taken as a serious threat to their localization strategy.

However, the future of Taiwan rests with the motherland. Facts indicate that any attempt to disconnect the island from the mainland is impractical and is inevitably doomed to failure.

The stubborn stance on this issue by the island's authorities also demonstrates that all Chinese, including Taiwan compatriots, should never relent in their struggle to stop attempts to disconnect and even separate the island from the motherland.
