The People's Daily publishes an editorial titled "Great Cause, Bright Future" Saturday calling for realizing the goals set by the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The congress elected a new Central Committee of the CPC and realized the smooth succession of the CPC central leadership.

A group of energetic leaders with great ability have entered the central leading organizations and the Party is flourishing and has great prospects.

It speaks highly of the third-generation central leadership with Jiang Zemin at the core, who, since the fourth plenary session of the 13th CPC Central Committee, have held high the great banner of Deng Xiaoping Theory and united and led the entire Party and people of different ethnic groups in overcoming various difficulties to make great achievements in reform, opening and modernization drive, and have won heartfelt support and respect from the whole Party and people.

Now, in order to carry forward the Party's cause and forge ahead into the future, many of them have shown Communists' exemplary conduct and nobility of character by taking the lead in retiring from their posts in the central leadership.

All the comrades in the Party are confident that the Party Central Committee with Hu Jintao as the general secretary will surely hold high the great banner of Deng Xiaoping Theory, implement the important thought of Three Represents in an all-round way, and carry out the historic mission entrusted to them.

The socialist cause with Chinese characteristics is sure to open up a new situation, and the Party and the nation will enjoy even better prospects.

The 16th National Party Congress made a historic contribution in establishing the important thought of Three Represents as the Party's guiding ideology, together with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory.

The 16th National Party Congress and the First Plenary Session of the 16th Party Central Committee have greatly inspired the whole Party and people of different ethnic groups in keeping pace with the times and in carrying forward the socialist cause with Chinese characteristics with full confidence.
