Iraq highlighted independence and lift of sanctions in a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday, declaring its acceptance of Security Council resolution 1441 seeking tougher inspection regime in the country.
Iraq highlighted independence and lift of sanctions in a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday, declaring its acceptance of Security Council resolution 1441 seeking tougher inspection regime in the country.
According to an unofficial transcript obtained by Xinhua, the letter said, "We inform you that we will deal with resolution 1441,with the main purpose set to avoid further sufferings of our people," the letter said, adding "we will not forget, and other people should not forget to preserve the dignity, security and independence of our country and our people."
"We are ready to receive the inspectors to find out that Iraq didn't produce weapons of mass destruction during their absence from 1998," the letter said, noting that after the resumption of inspections "the lies produced by the United States and the Great Britain will be uncovered."
It went on to say that after Iraq's cooperation on the ground has been proved, "it will be the duty of the Security Council to lift the sanctions on Iraq."
It will be necessary for the council to implement the paragraph14 of its resolution 687, which is determined to set up a nuclear free zone in the entire Middle East region, according to the letter.
