McDonald to Open 100 More Restaurants in Beijing Next Year

Though McDonald's Corp announced recently that the company has resolved to close 175 overseas restaurants, the company still plans to open 100 more restaurants in the area of Beijing next year according to original plan.

McDonald to Shut down 175 Overseas Restaurants

McDonald's Corp announced on November 8 that the company has resolved to close 175 overseas restaurants, reducing 400-600 staff worldwide and withdrawing from three Middle East and Latin American markets in the meanwhile. This message means a second extensive staff reduction. The company has been reluctant to reveal countries involved. However, it noted clearly that Brazil and Argentina, two major markets in Latin America, would be the exception, and that "among 600 staff set to cut down, those in U.S. would account for a half."

And related persons with Beijing McDonald's Co., Ltd. said they had not yet received any notice of strategic adjustments from the headquarters. Nonetheless, McDonald China won't be affected; instead, 100 more restaurants are poised to open in the area of Beijing next year according to original plan.

McDonald China has always maintained a steady and fast growth rate. Since its first restaurant was opened in Shenzhen in 1990, there are more than 500 so far, an increase of about 100 over the same period last year. Among top 100 fast-food restaurants released by China Hotel Association last August, 21 McDonald restaurants scattering across China were in the list, with a gross turnover of 3.408 bn yuan, while Beijing McDonald ranked first.

Through rapid business expansion in the past five years, McDonald has chain-restaurants up to more than 30,000, an increase of 30 percent. However, the company has to slow down the pace of expansion, hampered by the saturated U.S. fast food industry, slump global economy and mad cow diseased-beef in Europe and Japan.
