Russian President Vladimir Putin left on Monday for a Russia-EU summit in Brussels, which will focus on the issues of Russia's breakaway republic of Chechnya and its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad.
Sergei Prikhodko, deputy head of the presidential administration, confirmed Putin's departure. He said the summit's agenda also includes anti-terrorism cooperation, economic ties and pressing international affairs.
The summit was originally planned to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, but was moved to Brussels under strong protests from Russia after an international Chechen forum was held in Denmark shortly after the deadly hostage crisis in Moscow last month.
During his stay in Brussels, Putin will hold talks with NATO Secretary General George Robertson on joint steps in the "Twenty" framework and other aspects of Russia-NATO ties, Prikhodko said.
After the summit, Putin will fly to Norway and meet with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who will also be on a visit to Oslo.
Tuesday's talks between Putin and Schroeder, originally set for Oct. 24 but postponed by the Moscow hostage-taking crisis, will focus on bilateral relations and economic cooperation, especially in the fields of gas and aerospace, Prikhodko said.
Putin will also meet with Norwegian King Herald V. and Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik.
