The Taiwan-related part of a report delivered by Jiang Zemin at the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is of great significance for guiding future work relating to Taiwan, Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said Monday.
"This part reviews all major profound changes in, and outstanding features, of the situation in Taiwan and cross-Straitsties, puts forth guidelines for Taiwan-related work, underlines the focal points of the work and displays a firm resolution to complete the great cause of national reunification," said Chen, a delegate to the ongoing Party Congress, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.
The guidelines for Taiwan-related work outlined in Jiang's report mainly consist of three points, and the first is to adhere to the basic principle of "one country, two systems", fully implement Jiang's eight-point proposal, firmly stick to the "One China" principle and oppose "Taiwan independence" and any other splittist attempts, and seek an early resumption of dialogue and talks across the Straits on the basis of the "One China" principle, said Chen.
The second is to implement the principle of "placing hopes on the Taiwan people", expand economic, cultural and personnel exchanges across the Straits, and strive for the realization of the "three direct links" of mail, air and shipping services and trade across the Straits, he added.
The third and last point is to make maximal efforts with the greatest sincerity for the prospect of a peaceful reunification, but meanwhile never undertake to renounce the use of force and do not allow the Taiwan question to drag on indefinitely, said Chen.
"All these are major decisions made by the Party Central Committee in accordance with our country's development strategy and after comprehensively studying the overall situation for the Taiwan question," he said.
Chen said that under the guidance of the Party Congress report, his office would work harder and with greater confidence for the early settlement of the Taiwan question and realize the complete reunification of the motherland.
