Tornadoes Kill at Least Seven in US

At least seven people were killed on Sunday as devastating tornado-laden storms ripped through the midwest states of Tennessee and Ohio, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses, authorities said.

At least seven people were killed on Sunday as devastating tornado-laden storms ripped through the midwest states of Tennessee and Ohio, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses, authorities said.

Local television reports said at least five tornadoes were confirmed across middle and western Tennessee, with wind speeds ofup to 140 miles (224 km) per hour. At least three were killed whentheir mobile homes were overturned by the tornadoes.

The severe storms knocked out power to 2,700 homes in the Clarksville area and left at least 13 people injured, according toofficials at the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

Heavy storms with funnel clouds tore into northern Ohio late Sunday afternoon, killing at least four people in two counties andleaving many others trapped in buildings, the State Highway Patrolsaid.

The storms cut a 100-mile (160 km) swath in Ohio and emergency officials in many northern counties reported widespread damage to barns, homes and businesses.
