Rebels of Cote d'Ivoire on Saturday suspended their peace talks with the government following the murder of a top rebel leader's brother.

Rebel negotiator Guillaume Soro told a new conference in Lome that they decided to suspend the talks because President Laurent Gbagbo was not doing enough to ensure security.

Benoit Dacoury-Tabley was found shot dead in Abidjan on Friday, two day after his brother Louis left the government party to join the rebel political movement.

"As soon as the conditions are right, we are ready to re-start negotiations at any moment," Soro said.

On Oct. 30, representatives of the government and mutinous soldiers held their first face-to-face meeting here since the outbreak of the revolt.

The gap between both sides is still large as the government wants the rebels, who control about half the country to lay down their weapons, while the rebels are demanding Gbagbo's resignationand new elections.

Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema, who is spearheading the west African efforts to defuse Cote d'Ivoire's crisis, has appointed by the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States as coordinator to promote peace talks.

The Sept. 19 uprising, which plunged Cote d'Ivoire into its worst crisis since its independence from France in 1960, has claimed hundreds of lives and left tens of thousands of people homeless.
