US President George W. Bush has given broad authority in a variety of circumstances to launch attacks, such as the missile strike, that killed six al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen last week, a senior White House official said Sunday.
US President George W. Bush has given broad authority in a variety of circumstances to launch attacks, such as the missile strike, that killed six al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen last week, a senior White House official said Sunday.
"There are authorities that the president can give to officials," said Bush's national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.
"The president has given broad authority to US officials in a variety of circumstances to do what they need to do to protect the country," Rice told "Fox News Sunday," adding Bush is well within the balance of accepted practice and the letter of his constitutional authority.
"It's a new kind of war, and we've made very clear that it is important that this new kind of war be fought on different battlefields," she said.
Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harethi, the prime suspect in 2000 bombing of the warship USS Cole in the Yemeni port of Aden, and former body guard of the leader of the al-Qaeda networks were killed Tuesday along with five other al-Qaeda suspects.
