PLA Members Praise Defence Upgrades in Jiang's Report
Delegates from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Sunday rallied behind Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin's report to the 16th Party congress and were committed to continuing to upgrade national defence under the guidance of Jiang's Three Represents theory.
CPC delegates from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) have vowed to firmly establish the guiding status of the important thought of Three Represents in the army.
Remarks to this effect were made by Fu Quanyou, Yu Yongbo, Wang Ke, Wang Ruilin, Cao Gangchuan, Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou when they discussed Jiang Zemin's report to the ongoing 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which opened on Nov.8.
They said that the army will unswervingly adhere to the road of fewer but better troops with Chinese characteristics and provide an important guarantee for safeguarding national security and unity and building a well-off society in an all-round way.
The important theories about national defense and army building in Jiang's report have provided a clearer guidance for building a more revolutionary, modernized and regularized army, they said.
The army must always stick to the criterion of battle effectiveness and regard raising its battle effectiveness, especially its defense capabilities and combat effectiveness under high-tech conditions, as the starting point and goal of all its work.
"The report further elaborates on the guiding thoughts, principles and goals to advance all-round reform and the construction of military forces," said Wang Ke, one of the PLA delegates.
Cao Gangchuan, another PLA delegate, said Jiang's address on national defence pinpointed the direction for renovating the army in a revolutionary way.
"We need to fine-tune military equipment development in harmony with economic growth and make military equipment production more efficient with higher yields and lower input," Cao said.
Guo Boxiong, another PLA delegate, said renovating the army with science and technology is essential.
Guo added that the army needs to shift gears to building up its quality and effectiveness in war and operations instead of focusing on expanding military enlistment.
"More efforts are needed to transform the army from a human-resources-intensive force into a technology-intensive force," he added.
