Sharon, Netanyahu Agree on Date for Likud Leadership Vote
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu have reached an agreement to hold elections on Nov. 28 for chairmanship of their Likud party.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu have reached an agreement to hold elections on Nov. 28 for chairmanship of their Likud party.
According to the Israeli law, the man who comes out on top of the party's vote will then serve as the party's candidate for the next prime minister in national elections.
The upcoming elections are scheduled to be held at the end of January 2003.
As former Israeli prime minister during 1996 to 1999, Netanyahu is the major rival of Sharon in running for the chairmanship of theLikud, a right wing party expected to be the No. 1 ruling party in Israel's next parliament.
Sharon and Netanyahu also agreed on Dec. 8 as the date of Likud vote for the party's list to serve in the next parliament, aides close to Sharon said.
The Likud Central Committee will hold a convention on Tuesday, by which the date for the party's chairmanship election will formally approved.
A recent pool showed that Sharon leads Netanyahu in securing supports of Likud voters.
Sharon first expected the election for next party leader to be held in middle November, but Netanyahu said he needed one month forpreparation.
Since the chairman of the No. 1 party in parliament will be appointed as the next prime minister, local observers held that both Sharon and Netanyahu will have a chance to get the top position.
