Iraq Accepts New UN Resolution: TV
Iraq has accepted a new UN resolution after getting an assurance from Syria, a member of the 15-nation UNSecurity Council, that it does not foresee the automatic use of force against Iraq, the Arabic-language MBC TV reported on Saturday.
Iraq has accepted a new UN resolution after getting an assurance from Syria, a member of the 15-nation UNSecurity Council, that it does not foresee the automatic use of force against Iraq, the Arabic-language MBC TV reported on Saturday.
"Arab foreign ministers have extended a welcome to Iraq's acceptance of the resolution," the TV quoted visiting Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal as saying.
Faisal, who is here for an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers due on Sunday, told reporters after a consultative meeting Saturday night to prepare for the emergency meeting.
Earlier in the day, visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri said the international community has defeated a US scheme to attackIraq under the pretext of the United Nations Security Council.
"The world community has also rejected the US cravings for war,"Sabri told reporters after meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Maher, when asked about how Iraq sees the newly approved UN resolution on Iraq.
The UN Security Council on Friday unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution on Iraq seeking a tougher weapons inspection regime to disarm Baghdad.
Resolution 1441 requires Iraq provide, not later than 30 days, a "currently accurate, full and complete" declaration of all aspects of its programs to develop weapons of mass destruction and systems to deliver them.
"Further material breach" of Iraq's obligations would incur "serious consequences," the resolution warned.
