Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov on Friday expressed Moscow's concern over the UN Security Council draft resolution on Iraq that would be voted on late Friday.
"The draft was revised considerably. The important thing is that the automatic use of force against Iraq was scrapped off. Theinspection procedure was brought in compliance with the UN standards. It does not go much beyond the framework, in which international inspectors used to work," said Fedotov, quoted by the Interfax news agency.
"However, Moscow still has concerns about the issue. Consultations will be held prior to the vote," Fedotov said.
Russia and France, both permanent members of the UN Security Council with veto power, have been opposing the adoption of a tough US-drafted UN resolution on Iraq which Washington hopes willautomate the use of force against Baghdad in the event of Iraqi noncompliance.
After encountering strong opposition from the international community, the United States presented a revised draft to the Security Council on Wednesday, which offered a "final opportunity"for Iraq to comply with disarmament obligations.
The revised draft warned that Iraq's failure to comply with itsdisarmament obligations would lead to "serious consequences," a phrase that could be interpreted as military strikes.
