Chinese strongman Wu Meijin hoped to beat the weightlifting legend Turkish Halil Mutlundespite his failure of breaking the 56kg Asian record in China's domestic weightlifting competition.

The 22-year-old Wu, who clinched the Busan Asiad men's 56kg gold, on Thursday in Fuzhou vowed to win a gold from the World weightlifting championships slated for November 18-26 in Warsaw, Poland.

"Beating Mutlun is my target in the upcoming Worlds. I want to give him a heavy punch by clinching the 56kg title in Warsaw," said Wu.

Mutlu set three world records to win the 2000 Sydney Olympic 56kg gold. He lifted 138kg in the snatch and 167.5kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 305kg at the Olympics.

Since winning gold in Atlanta in 1996, Mutlu has dominated his weight division with ease, undefeated and virtually unchallenged.

"Wining the Worlds is just my first step to challenge the Turkish. I want him to know my power and I think the 2004 Olympic Games would be our final showdown." Wu added.
