Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Thursday lashed out at the United States and Britain for exerting pressure on the UN Security Council to adopt tough resolutions on Iraq's disarmament.

"The two (US and British) governments are seeking to pressure the Security Council into adopting resolutions that contradict the UN charter and international law," Saddam told visiting Malaysian Information Minister Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob.

Washington and London are dealing with the international community "as if their orders must be obeyed," the state-run Iraqi television quoted Saddam as saying.

The Iraqi leader's remarks came as the United States, backed by its closest ally Britain, is seeking to push through a new UN resolution which will "automate" the use of force in the event of Iraqi noncompliance in its disarmament.

But Saddam warned the world against such a resolution, saying the world would be ruled by a "new law that is based on power and opportunity instead of love and justice" if the United States and Britain fulfill their wishes.

The United States on Wednesday presented a revised draft resolution to the UN Security Council which offers a "final opportunity" for Iraq to eliminate its weapons of mass destruction.

US Ambassador to the United Nations John Negroponte told reporters that the new draft "is the best way to achieve the disarmament of Iraq by peaceful means, obviously provided that Iraq complies fully with its obligations."

He added that his delegation "intended to have the resolution put to vote some time during the day on Friday."

Pushed by France, Russia and China, the three veto-wielding council members, the new text added several lines "reaffirming the commitment of all member states to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq, Kuwait, and the neighboring states," but it still leaves room for military actions.
