China's IT industry has grown at a phenomenal rate over the last dozen or so years and is now a pillar of the country's economy.
In the past decade, China has developed the world's largest telecommunications network. Its 397 million telephone users - 90 times that of 1989 - have turned the country into the biggest telecoms market in the world, with revenue from the industry in 2001 standing at 415 billion yuan (US$50 billion), 40 times that of 1989.
The Internet arrived in China in 1994 and since its advent it has witnessed an annual 300 per cent increase.

The sales revenue of electronic goods suppliers achieved 890 billion yuan (US$107 billion) in 2001, 16.7 times that of 1989, while the 75 billion yuan (US$9 billion) worth of profits in 2001 are 13.4 times up on 1989.
