China has begun taking measures to prevent landslides and other potential geological hazards at the site of the Three Gorges Reservoir on China's Yangtze River.

Li Yong'an, deputy general manager of the China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Development Co., said that, by June 2003, the waterlevel in the reservoir is scheduled to reach 135 meters. Thus far,198 sites of potential landslides have been identified below this line and efforts are underway to treat them.

In 2001, China's State Council decided to allocate 4 billion yuan (about 481.9 million US dollars) to address potential geological hazards in the Three Gorges reservoir. By early Octoberof this year, 490 million yuan (about 59 million dollars) of the investment had been spent.

The Three Gorges Project Development Co. has identified a totalof 1,168 potential landslide hazards in or near the site of the 632-square-kilometer reservoir. It will reinforce some of them andarrange for the relocation of residents when necessary.

Li Lierong, director of the Geological Environment Department under the Ministry of Land and Resources, said the ecosystem in the reservoir area is fragile, with loose soil texture and frequent floods and rainstorms. If preventive measures are not taken, the hidden geological hazards could cause serious damage.

The reservoir is located near Yichang in central China's Hubei Province. It is an important part of China's mammoth Three Gorges Project, which is expected to become an important flood-control and power generation base.
