In Shanghai's bustling port, the daily handling capacity of import and export goods has exceeded 300 million US dollars, according to the latest report released by the Shanghai Bureau of Statistics.
An official with the bureau, who did not give his name, attributed the active trade to Shanghai's strategy of opening up to both international and domestic markets in various fields in the past decade.
The bureau's statistics show that in 2000, the total amount of goods coming in and going out of the Shanghai port amounted to more than 100 billion US dollars. In the following year, the figure soared to 120.488 billion US dollars, more than six times that of 1989.
In 1989, exports from Shanghai were mainly textiles and farm produce, whereas today, exports are chiefly high-tech, mechanical and electrical products.
The official said that nearly one fourth of China's total imports and exports are handled by the port of Shanghai, while the figure was only 17.4 percent 13 years ago.
